Large old flag from the Zaire period (Democratic Republic of the Congo) in good condition. This flag was manufactured in the 70s. The material is cotton. This flag was handmade/old-industrial technique produced and consists of sewn fabric panels (no print). The star and diagonal stripe are appliqué stitched. During the Cold War Zaire was an important ally of Western countries in Central Africa. The country played a strategic role in regional politics and conflicts, and the flag stood as an international symbol of a strong, centralized state under Mobutu’s rule. In 1997, after Mobutu’s downfall, the country got its old name back: Democratic Republic of the Congo. The flag largely retained the same design, but the blue color was officially lightened (sky blue), marking the end of the Zaire period that this flag represents. Size: 300 x 140 cm
