After starting his career in teaching, then in banking, he turned to comics. His first story (Une Belle Histoire de l'Oncle Paul) appeared in Spirou in 1973. He then became assistant to Tibet, and later to Christian Denayer. From 1977 onwards, he illustrated a number of short stories for the magazine Tintin, before embarking on the Années de feu (a collection published by Lombard in 1982). In 1983, he appeared in Circus magazine with Cargo, which he conceived as a complete author. The same year, he drew La Dernière Auberge for Bédescope. For the same publisher, he undertook Château d'Ichor in 1984 and Boulevard de Marilyn in 1985. The same year, he wrote Yerushalaim, illustrated by Emmanuel Moynot and published in Vécu. In 1986, once again for Circus, he created Berlin. In 1991, he founded his own publishing house and launched the Yin-Yang series. Since 1993, the Cargo and Berlin series have been copyrighted exclusively by Michel Schetter. The Cargo series is reissued by Schetter éditeur, with a previously unpublished title. In June 2005, Schetter publishes an autobiography, "Sabre au Clair", an independent author's account of his life, with some hair-raising reflections!
