Claude Lorrain (1600-1682)

Claude Lorrain (1600-1682)

Follower / European School (Claude Lorrain style, nicknamed "El Lorenés") Oil on canvas Period: 18th – 19th century Support dimensions: 73 x 97 cm Frame included: Yes, period frame richly carved and gilt. Extraordinary panoramic-format classical landscape executed in oil on canvas. The work is a remarkable period version or derivative of one of the most celebrated compositions by the master of idyllic Baroque landscape, Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée, 1600–1682), originally titled View of Delphi with a Procession (1673). Stylish and Compositional Analysis: The work sublimely embodies the aesthetics of the "ideal" or pastoral landscape that Lorrain popularized in Rome during the 17th century, inspiring generations of classicist painters and European vedutisti. Composition and light: The scene is framed in the foreground by majestic arboreal masses detailed with great delicacy, whose branches open to guide the viewer’s eye toward an infinite maritime horizon tinged with twilight light. Narrative elements: In the lower left, a group of figures of classical inspiration rests in the shade, while on the right a solemn procession crosses toward a monumental circular fortified Greco-Roman-inspired architecture (evoking the mythological vision of the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi). Atmospheric perspective: Notable is the superb handling of glazes in the sky and the tonal degradation of distant mountains, achieving that serene, poetic, nostalgic atmosphere that pays homage to the classical texts of Virgil. The canvas is completed with an imposing gilded frame carved with ornamental reliefs and vegetal motifs, whose packaging greatly enhances depth of perspective and makes the whole an object of very high decorative and collectible value. Bibliography: - Röthlisberger, Marcel (1961): Claude Lorrain: The Paintings. Yale University Press. (Rational catalog that records the original work and its variations within the Liber Veritatis series, where this famous composition is documented). - Langdon, Helen (1989): Claude Lorrain. Phaidon Press. (In-depth study on the development of the ideal landscape and the influence of architectural vedutes on the European market). Examples: The Reference Original: View of Delphi with a Procession (1673) by Claude Lorrain, oil on canvas, currently preserved in the prestigious collection of the Art Institute of Chicago (Inv. 1941.1020). Another period classic version is safeguarded in the famous Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome under the title Vedute von Delphi mit einer Opferprozession. Recent Market Parallel: An oil of similar composition attributed to the Roman/ Lorrain follower school, titled Vedute von Delphi mit einer Opferprozession, was successfully adjudicated in prestigious European auction rooms such as the Berlin HISTORIA Auktionshaus (Lot 7630, 2026 sale), demonstrating the continued and solid interest of international collectors in this exact motif. From private collections Note: "To ensure the safety and perfect condition of the work, depending on its size and nature, transportation and delivery may be carried out by the seller."
