Citizen Promaster ALTICHRON in Titanium. The new challenge for Citizen Usually a watch enthusiast exhibits this behavior: as a youngster he is attracted to digital and quartz watches; years pass and he begins to dream of mechanical (and Swiss) ones; then, with the first substantial earnings, he fulfills the dream of adding one or more luxury watches to his collection. Citizen, to name a major Japanese manufacturer, is among the largest producers of mechanical watches and quartz watches in the world, boasting an inexhaustible series of records and patents. At Baselworld 2013 it presented a new range within the Promaster family, called Altichron. THE STORY OF THE ALTICHRON COLLECTION Altichron is not a new name, just as the Promaster family is not new, well known to professional divers and to multi-use watch lovers. It was launched in the 1980s and completed, together with Aqualand and Aerochron, Citizen's offer of sport watches. The Altichron featured, among its characteristics, the ability to measure pressure and altitude (from -300m to +5000m), very useful functions for climbers or simply for lovers of technical “gadgets.” They were housed in a case with the typical Citizen sports style: a sensing element located at 9 o’clock and the various functions managed at 2, 4, 8, and 10 o’clock respectively. In 2013 Citizen presented the new Citizen Promaster Altichron dive watch up to 200m with a compass and altimeter (without a barometer). What immediately strikes is the design of the watch. To say it is successful would be simplistic: it vaguely recalling the first Citizen Promaster Altichron but it is in order: more attractive, it has a decidedly original look, and it is the result of a new stylistic direction. With a build quality capable of elevating the standards of the Promaster family. And then, any digital display disappeared! It is a 100% analog watch! If you look at the dial, the four concentric subdials recall another little-known but very beautiful watch produced in a limited series by A. Dunhill years ago, the Pentagraph A-Centric. The Citizen Promaster Altichron’s design, however, is typically high-tech with aviation-styled, skeletonized, and colored subdials like the reference scales, to aid readability on a very crowded dial. The primary focus is on reading hours, minutes and seconds: in short, the Citizen Promaster Altichron is a five-subdial watch (six with the 9 o’clock one). The dial is a riot of information: the functions guaranteed by the electronic brain of the Citizen Promaster Altichron are many and the logic is complex; in short, it is a computer on the wrist, so describing them all in a single article would be impossible, you’d escape and I’d understand you, but if you want to know more, arm yourself with some patience!. Power: the movement of the Citizen Promaster Altichron is Eco-Drive, thus it recharges with natural light through a photovoltaic cell placed under the dial, according to a precise table linking exposure time to light with recharge duration. The power reserve indicator is at 9 o’clock on a scale divided into four sectors from 0 to 340 days. If the watch is low on power (indicator in the first sector) the measuring functions are inhibited. Altimeter: activates and deactivates by pressing the pusher at 8 o’clock; the reading is obtained via three hands; indications are based on 1000, 100, and 2.5 meters. The power-reserve dial, thanks to the external white numbered scale, serves to indicate altitudes from 1000 to 10000 meters. The central dial indicates altitude from -300 to 900 meters.
