Circle of Jean Portaels - Orientalist scene/ Belgian school, mid-19th century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Allegorical pictorial sketch, probably conceived as a preparatory study for a decorative or larger-scale project. The composition is articulated with loose and dynamic brushstrokes, prioritizing spatial organization and the movement of the figures over the final finish. The warm palette, dominated by ochres, reds, and muted blues, reflects the Italianate influences characteristic of Jean Portaels’ artistic milieu. The work belongs to the 19th-century Belgian academic tradition and testifies to the creative and experimental process typical of preliminary studies for monumental or architectural compositions.
