Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 3 Savannah Harbour Etchings, comprising estate-stamped lower right and pencil titled 'Barnard Street Slip' lower left harbor scene (foxing to paper, loss to right edge with some tape to upper edge, minor mat burn), pencil inscribed 'by Christopher Murphy' lower right and titled lower left etching of Barnard Street at Factors Walk (some foxing to paper); both unframed, and estate-stamped lower right and pencil titled 'Dock Hands' lower left harbor scene with two seated figures, matted on cardboard (good condition, not viewed out of mat). Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of Barnard Street Slip 11 1/4 in. x Width: 14 in.
