Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 3 Charleston Etchings, comprising signed etching lower left depicting a street view with part of church façade, house and figures (losses to corners, minor foxing and toning to paper, tear to upper edge), signed lower right etching of a street scene with a figure sitting on the house porch with two kids playing next to her (minor foxing, toning to paper), and signed lower right and pen titled on verso etching of raised entranceway structure of Tupper House (mat burn, foxing and toning to paper, losses and tears to upper and right edges and along the lower left edge of a plate), with visible mounting residue on front and verso); all unframed. Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of street view with church 11 in. x Width: 12 1/2 in.
