About the artists: The American artist Christo was born on June 13, 1935 as Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo. Together with his wife Jeanne-Claude, he forms an inseparable artistic unit; Christo and Jeanne-Claude work closely together on all projects. Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon was also born on June 13, 1935, in Casablanca (Morocco). She comes from a French military family, her schooling takes place in France and Switzerland. She then studied Latin and philosophy at the University of Tunis. Christo studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia from 1953 to 1956, in 1957 he transferred for a semester to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1958 he went to Paris, where he met Jeanne-Claude. They married in 1960; their son Cyril Christo was born on May 11, 1960 (today a poet). Christo and Jeanne-Claude describe their artistic collaboration as egalitarian from the outset and equal in its share. However, for simplicity the art was credited as originating from Christo alone, until 1994 when Jeanne-Claude’s name finally appeared. All smaller wrapped objects, drawings, collages, models, and lithographs to this day carry only Christo’s name. All large, outdoor temporally installed projects and the major indoor projects are works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. They financed the often enormously expensive art projects through the sale of all drawings, sketches, and early wrapped objects that had ever been produced. They accepted neither sponsorship money nor donations. About the artwork: Harry Shunk and Janos Kender documented all phases of Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet, Little Bay, Sydney, Australia, 1968–69, Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s monumental artwork, created for the coast and cliffs of Little Bay near Sydney, Australia. It was the first major wrapping project by the legendary artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, more than a decade before they became famous worldwide for their monumental environmental installations. Wrapped Coast was the largest single artwork ever produced. The expanse was so vast that no vantage point allowed a complete view. Instead, visitors walked for an hour to cross the surface. Two and a half kilometers of coastline and cliffs up to 26 meters high were wrapped in fabric and rope, creating a landscape that resembled a lunar terrain, an alpine snowfield, or an Arctic terrain transformed by wide winds into streams and billowing sails. Wrapped Coast, Little Bay was completed on October 28, 1969 and remained on view for 10 weeks.
