Their works, which often wrapped monumental structures and landscapes, questioned traditional concepts of art and played with the perception of space and object. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's works stand in the tradition of Marcel Duchamp's Readymade concept, in which everyday objects are placed in a new artistic context. Duchamp's "Fountain" (1917) questioned the nature of art, in a similar way that Christo's "Wrapped Reichstag" (1995) or the "Wrapped Pont Neuf" (1985) reinterpreted the function and meaning of architecture. These wrappings also reference the works of Man Ray, whose "The Enigma of Isidore Ducasse" (1920) likewise played with wrapping and mystery. Their temporary works and focus on impermanence connect them with artists such as Eva Hesse and Robert Morris. Hesse's "Repetition Nineteen III" (1968) and Morris' installations also reflect the idea that art does not have to be eternal to leave a deep impression. The temporal finiteness of their works makes the process of creation and decay a central part of the artistic statement.
