Christmas decoration (9) - Textile, Wood, Plastic - Nativity scene fabric set

The ensemble comprises nine figures: Mary, Joseph, the Christ Child in a wooden manger, three kings, and three shepherds. The largest figure measures about 20 cm, on average 17–19 cm. Characteristic are elaborately draped textile garments, gold-colored trimmings, color-painted heads and hands, and wooden stand plates. On some stand plates the brand “BUTZON & BERCKER” is affixed, the website address www.bube.de, sometimes with reference numbers and/or price tags. An exact workshop note is not available. King in violet: violet garment with broad gold borders and dark blue mantle. King in black: black-gold, star-patterned mantle; colorful undergarment; orange turban. Shepherd with staff: dark cloak and hat; slim standing figure. Shepherd with lamb: blue-gray outer garment; white lamb in the hands. Shepherd in fur clothing: light, roughly textured upper part and green trousers; carries an attribute. Technique, style and origin The figures are presumably made of casting mass. The faces and hands appear to be plastically modeled and polychromed. The garments are separately crafted from various textiles and decorated with braids. The construction is typical for clothed nativity figures. The stylistic proximity to Alpine-Southern German nativity-tradition suggests a possible place of manufacture. Condition and completeness The shown faces, hands, textiles and bases predominantly appear well-preserved. Some loose threads or decorative braids may be present.
