Christie's Amsterdam – The Josef Herman Collection of African Art - Mbole

An extremely important and sought-after auction catalog from Christie's Amsterdam, issued for the iconic auction on December 12, 2000: The Josef Herman Collection of African Art. This reference work comprises 364 detailed lots and forms an indispensable reference for collectors, experts and art historians specializing in tribal art from West- and Central Africa. Josef Herman (1911–2000), a prominent Polish-British expressionist painter and member of the Royal Academy, built during his life a world-renowned collection known for the exceptional quality of the selected (often miniature) African sculptures. The catalog excels in in-depth ethnographic descriptions, provenance data, and direct scholarly cross-references to leading literature and exhibitions, including: William Fagg, Miniature Wood Carvings of Africa (1970) Tom Phillips (Ed.), Africa: The Art of a Continent (Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1995) Historical exhibition references such as the exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (1969). The catalog is in neat, solid condition with only light signs of use consistent with age. This copy includes handwritten pencil notes (bidding notes/estimates) on various lots. This gives the document an extra historical dimension and an intriguing insight into the dynamics surrounding this auction. A unique opportunity for building or further expanding a specialized art-historical library. Shipping is by Track & Trace. When purchasing multiple lots, the seller applies, if relevant, a fair adjustment to the shipping costs, appropriate to the total volume and insured value. Pickup is possible in The Hague, Benoordehout (2596GN).
