CHINESE SWATOW SLIP-DECORATED BLUE GLAZE CHARGER

CHINESE SWATOW SLIP-DECORATED BLUE GLAZE CHARGER

Ming Dynasty, ca. AD 1368 - 1644 > A Chinese Zhangzhou, or Swatow, charger with a broad shallow well and slightly everted rim. The dark blue-glazed surface is enlivened with pale slip decoration. Accompanied by a wooden storage box. Zhangzhou wares, traditionally called Swatow, were made in southern China for overseas markets. Their bold designs and large serving forms became part of maritime exchanges connecting China with Southeast Asia and beyond. Their history is therefore one of both Chinese manufacture and use in other societies. > For similar see: Sotheby's, 19th March 2007, lot 756 and 12th May 1970, lot 53. > Size: 360mm x 85mm; Weight: 1.73kg > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex. Private Japanese Collection. > This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. >
