Wholesome Near-Mint Dollar with Sun's Mausoleum CHINA. Silver "Mausoleum" Dollar Pattern, ND (1927). Nanking Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-58. L&M-85; K-609; KM-Unlisted; WS-0130; Wenchao-898 (rarity: ★★★). Mintage: 480. Designed and engraved by Richard Placht of the Vienna Mint. With just the slightest degree of light wear across only the highest points, this thoroughly enthralling specimen offers an immense degree of lustrous brilliance remaining across both sides. Though largely untoned, it does present some tinges of color at the peripheries, with some hints of frostiness upon the devices. A pattern that was criticized in its era due to the portrait essentially looking nothing like its subject, it is nevertheless exceptionally revered and collected today owing to its paltry mintage figure. Despite the wonderful engraving work undertaken by the Austrian engraver, this piece was destined to fail on account of its design elements. Placht had never seen the mausoleum in question, and may also have never even seen a person of Chinese descent, making his rendering of Sun Yat-sen rather distinct from Sun's actual appearance. Kann reports a Chinese Mint official's comment that the portrait bore a much stronger resemblance to German military leader-turned-president, Paul von Hindenburg, instead of the intended Chinese hero. Click here to see Coins in Motion. 品相完好孫中山陵墓壹圓銀幣 民國十六年孫中山像陵墓壹圓銀樣幣。南京造幣廠。 珍稀度：★★★。發行量480枚。由維也納造幣廠雕刻師Richard Placht設計及雕刻。最高鑄處僅見極輕微磨損，兩面光澤盈潤，魅力充沛。幣面幾近無包漿，邊緣隱現絲絲色彩，圖文略帶霜面質感。此樣幣當年因肖像失真而飽受批評，然因發行量之稀少而備受今日藏家珍視。奧地利雕刻師雕工精湛，惟圖案設計先天失據而功虧一簣——Placht從未親睹該陵墓，亦可能從未見過華人面孔，致使孫中山像與本尊相貌相去甚遠。據Kann所載，曾有中國造幣廠官員指出，此肖像與德國軍事領袖兼前總統興登堡更為神似，與意圖致敬的國父判若天淵。
