CHINA. Kwangtung. 1 Mace 4.6 Candareens (20 Cents), ND (1889). Kwangtung

Wholly Original "Reversed" Minor from Kwangtung CHINA. Kwangtung. 1 Mace 4.6 Candareens (20 Cents), ND (1889). Kwangtung Mint (struck from Heaton Mint dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS AU-55. L&M-125; K-18; KM-Y-196; WS-0933; Wenchao-554 (rarity: ★★★). An exceptionally alluring and resounding example that is also without issue, this oddly denominated minor emanates from the Kwantung mint's initial output of coinage, with dies that were supplied by the Heaton mint in Birmingham. Though crisply rendered and highly appealing, the overall design of this series proved highly unpopular and was quickly disbanded, with the slightly higher weight standard and the English legend surrounding the emperor's name spelling disaster among the populace. An undisputed RARITY that abounds with solid brilliance among the protected areas and some olive-gunmetal gray toning across both sides. Estimate: $15,000 - $30,000.
