Pleasingly Hued Tael from Hupeh CHINA. Hupeh. Tael, Year 30 (1904). Wuchang Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, AU Details. L&M-180; K-933; KM-Y-128.2; WS-0878. Small characters variety. Part of a brief, one-year series that is always in demand, this crown, here with smaller characters, does display some subtler aspects of circulation and an older cleaning, but the color that has emerged is rather enticing and appealing, with hues of goldenrod, amber, cobalt, and violet all evident. Overall, a splendid crown with much in its favor. 648,000 Hupeh Taels were originally minted, inclusive of both large and small characters types; however, it is unknown exactly how many of each were struck. This Tael was introduced as part of a projected coinage reform based upon the traditional Chinese weight standard, rather than the Dollar system. In the initial proposal to produce these coins, it was also suggested to produce smaller denominations in the values of 1, 2, and 5 Mace. However, no such pieces have surfaced (even in pattern form), and it is unlikely that they were ever produced. The general populace found it complicated to convert two distinctly different coinage systems, especially when making change, with this system being quickly abandoned. Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000. Click here to see Coins in Motion. 湖北悅色壹兩 光緒三十年湖北省造大清銀幣庫平雙龍壹兩銀幣。武昌造幣廠。 小字版。僅發行一年的版別，一直廣受歡迎。此枚小字版雖見輕微流通痕跡及早年清洗，但已養成悦目包漿，金黃、琥珀、鈷藍、紫羅蘭色澤交織。整體品相出色，令人心醉神怡。湖北雙龍壹兩有大字、小字兩版，合計鑄有648,000枚，各版鑄量不詳。此一兩幣乃幣制改革方案的組成部分，以中國傳統重量制度為本，而非銀圓體系。方案中原擬同時鑄造一錢、二錢及五錢等小面值，然至今從未發現任何實物或樣幣，相信從未付諸鑄造。由於民間難以適應兩套截然不同的幣制並行換算，此制度遂迅速廢棄。
