Phenomenally Rare 1907 Peking 1 Tael Colour Trial Pair CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Lot of (2). Russo-Chinese Bank. 1 Tael, 1907. P-S531cts1 & S531cts2. S/M#O5-20. Front & Back Color Trial Specimens. PMG About Uncirculated 55 to Choice About Uncirculated 58. Peking. This is the first time we have handled a complete pair of uniface colour trials. This Peking 'Chingping Tsuyin Tael' series features a unique design where the English obverse is designed horizontally, and the Chinese reverse is vertical. The obverse features a pleasant combination of purple, yellow-green and black colours, while the reverse is olive green and red. PMG Comments "Previously Mounted" on P-S531cts2. This is an incredibly rare series with only one specimen and two uniface colour trial pairs graded by PMG to date. It is worth pointing out that we sold a single uniface reverse in April 2024 (which fetched $5760 including the Buyer's Premium), and it is possible that the owner may not have the uniface obverse to match it. Therefore, this complete pair might be the only one available to private collectors. In the early 20th century, Peking was a much less prolific place for commercial banks to operate in, as the major trading cities were Shanghai, Hankow, and Tientsin. As such, notes issued in Peking are often in the minority and were printed in much smaller quantities. Still, the Russo-Chinese Bank probably opened its Peking branch sometime in the mid to late 1890's during its rapid expansion. The first notes issued by this branch are the 1, 5, and 10 Dollars of 1903, printed by Nissan & Arnold, followed by the 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 Chingping Tsuyin Taels of 1907, printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Of the Tael series, at least one specimen note is known for each of the five denominations as well as an issued one tael. Therefore, all Peking branch notes are exceptionally rare.
