Appealing "Low Stars" Dollar with Autograph of Sun Yat-sen A Phenomenal Republican-Era Relic Dated to 1921 Charity Bazaar CHINA. Dollar, ND (1912). Nanking Mint. PCGS AU-55. L&M-42; K-603; KM-Y-319; WS-0085. Low five-pointed stars variety. A delightful survivor of the type, this lightly circulated crown only displays some minor wear throughout, with the gunmetal gray backdrop yielding to russet and amber hues that enliven it rather enchantingly. The coin, however, is merely the starting point for this EXCEEDINGLY IMPORTANT and VERY RARE lot, as it is accompanied by an envelope and signed letter by none other than then-president, Sun Yat-sen. Sun married into the prominent Soong family, marrying middle daughter Ching-ling as his second wife in 1915. The couple quickly became a powerful pair in the affairs of the early republic. In May 1921, Yat-sen assumed a leadership role in the southern breakaway that stood in opposition to the warlords in the north. A few months later, a bazaar was organized and held on 24 July 1921 for the benefit of soldiers involved in this domestic conflict. A letter from Ching-ling's younger sister Mei-ling (who later became the wife of Chiang Kai-shek in 1927) mentions her elder sister's role. Writing from Shanghai to Emma Mills (in the United States) on 6 July 1921, she recounts "...my sister, Mrs. Sun, in Canton is President of the War Relief Society of the Southern Government, and sent me a book to subscribe. I went for her. This morning I went out, and got five hundred dollars. But oh what beastly hot work! I have to go around asking for money, but this fund is for soldiers' families, and I felt I had to do my [...]." Indeed, there is an image that shows the couple at this bazaar, with an accompanying letter here mentioning that "This is the first coin minted to commemorate the Republic and was bought by Mr. Jeppersey at The Canton Womens' War Relief Bazaar," while bearing signatures of the pair---the latter of which is mentioned in her role as "President of the Womens' War Relief Association." It should be noted, however, that it seems very likely that Yat-sen signed for both himself and his wife, as her signature closely resembles his specific handwriting. This GREAT IMPORTANCE and TREMENDOUS RARITY of a signature such as that of Sun Yat-sen cannot be overstated, and it is without a doubt one of the more significant autographs of the 20th century. Of note, this signature shows his characteristic style seen later in his life. For example, earlier-dated signatures feature both Ss in his name (for Sun and Sen) capitalized, whereas, by letters dating to 1918, he had begun rendering "sen" as lowercase only. Additionally, the S, when capitalized, invariably featured a distinct upper loop in earlier signatures, while those of signatures dating to 1920 and 1923 are as rendered here, with a sharp point to the uppercase S and without a loop. Lastly, early signatures did not employ a hyphen when rendering his given name (Yat Sen), while the signature dating to as early as 1920 did begin featuring this orthographic aspect (Yat-sen). Undoubtedly, this signature is consistent with not only his own penmanship, but also the manner in which he signed his name in the early 1920s. While the recipient of this Dollar and accompanying signature isn't certain, it would seem likely that the typed name is a slight error. The name upon the envelope reads "Mr. Jeppesey," notably without the "r." Furthermore, the Danish patronymic -sen can often be morphed into -sey or -sy in English, meaning that "Jeppesey," as written on the envelope, is likely for a Danish national whose name would have been known rather as Jeppesen. Below his name on the envelope, one can make out "Shameen," also rendered as "Shamin" or "Shamian," which is a sandbank island just off from Canton/Kwangtung. As it was an island heavily populated by trading companies and western influences, it seems highly likely that the recipient was stationed here at the time of the bazaar. Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000.
