An antique Regency-style chess game of large size and great sophistication. The game was made in the 19th century and comes with its wooden box. The king measures 9.7 cm with a base of 3 cm. The pieces are in very good condition for their age, with very few damages to note apart from a few imperfections, gouges, and small chips on the collars. Its main feature is its magnificent knights, with a bell-shaped base rather than a vase, rounded forms, a short and stocky body, and an expressive gaze. This style of knights is among the rarest to find for Regency style; some call them “chubby” because they resemble the knights found on the “chubby” variant of Regency style, which blends Regency elements with Saint George elements and with bell-shaped bases. The pieces are carved with notable thickness, fairly wide stems, accentuated by intermediate “false collars” between the collars. The king’s crown contributes to the style and the chunky impression given by the knights, with a broad yet thin crown, as if pressed down on itself.
