Chatham, Virginia. Bank of Pittsylvania. 1861 $10. PMG Choice Fine 15. No. 94. Plate B. Situated to the north of Danville in Pittsylvania County, Chatham was once home to the short-lived and enigmatic Bank of Pittsylvania which organized in 1860 and failed shortly thereafter in 1863 likely owing to the economic deficiencies of the period. Notes from this short-lived institution are nonetheless striking in compositional terms. Here a female allegorical figure is seen tending to a flock of sheep while additional portraits of a young girl (left) and three-time Presidential candidate Henry Clay (right) can be seen along the margins. Fully signed and issued although the penned elements are faint while rich color may yet be observed by virtue of the engraved design. Estimate: $500 - $700. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Earlier from Bowers & Merena sale of March 2010, Lot 1105. Click here for certification details from PMG.
