Charles Vickery (American, 1913-1998), Seascape, O/C

Property of a Private Collector, Boca Raton, FL. Charles Vickery (American, 1913-1998), Seascape, O/C, signed lower right, depicting coastal rocks and crashing waves with a ship on the horizon, in a wood frame with a mat. Frame size: 22 1/4 in. x 26 in. Charles Vickery was a celebrated seascape artist known for capturing the changing moods of water. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, in 1913, he studied art in Chicago but credited Lake Michigan as his greatest teacher. He believed artists needed to observe nature directly rather than rely on photographs. Early in his career, he sold paintings cheaply while working other jobs to support himself. Vickery spent years studying waves and weather along Lake Michigan to perfect his craft. In 1951, praise from Chicago Tribune critic Eleanor Jewitt helped establish him as one of the finest seascape artists of his time. (scrimshawgallery.com) Height: by sight 15 1/2 in. x Width: 19 1/2 in. Condition Good condition, paint loss to left edge of the pictorial surface. Notice to bidders:The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging.
