Charles Folk (1920-2007) Ecole française - La mare au coucher du soleil.

Beautiful oil on canvas signed Charles Folk, depicting a twilight landscape crossed by a peaceful pond, under the last glow of a sunset. The work bears the artist's signature, painted in red in the lower right corner. The composition captivates with its melancholic atmosphere and the subtlety of its contrasts. In the foreground, tall grasses and dark banks blend into dense vegetation, while in the distance, a luminous opening reveals the landscape to a sky ablaze with orange, pink and coppery hues. The reflections of the sunset quietly extend onto the water surface, bringing depth and softness to this silent scene. The painter here favors the expression of light and atmosphere over a meticulous description of the landscape. His supple, sometimes generous brushwork gives relief to the foliage and the terrain, while the more blended passages of the sky create a sense of calm and depth. The contrast between the almost black vegetative masses and the warm luminosity of the horizon constitutes one of the main attractions of this painting. The work is executed in oil on canvas and measures 50 × 65 cm, unframed. It is presented on its stretcher, without an outer frame. The canvas has undergone relining and shows traces of old overpaintings, notably perceptible in certain dark parts of the composition. The surface also shows a network of craquelure and irregularities of material visible in the photographs. These interventions and signs of age should be taken into account in assessing its condition. An intimate painting, particularly appealing for the depth of its tonalities, the softness of its twilight light and the collected atmosphere of this waterside landscape.
