Charles Ernest Butler (1864–1933) – A Garden in Bloom An attractive work by the renowned British painter Charles Ernest Butler (1864–1933), signed “C. E. Butler” in the lower right corner. The composition depicts a bright garden traversed by a path, flanked by abundant vegetation and flowering roses. The garden’s architecture is suggested by the brick wall running along the left-hand side, while the large trees in the background close the composition and create a pleasant sense of depth. What stands out most is the treatment of light and color, built with a lively and loose brushstroke. The greens of the vegetation blend with the pinks and reds of the flowers and with the warm tones of the path, while the sky, resolved with blues and whites, brings luminosity to the whole. The result is an intimate and highly decorative scene, in which Butler shows a notably more spontaneous facet than that present in his grand historical and figurative compositions. This type of subject matter also has a direct connection with the artist’s known body of work. Butler extensively cultivated landscape and garden scenes, and works such as A Garden in Bloom, dated 1926, as well as various landscapes from the 1920s and 1930s are known. In 1930 he headlined an exhibition of around 34 works in Reading, where critics highlighted precisely his ability to represent effects of light, heat, and atmosphere in the landscape. Charles Ernest Butler was born in St Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, in 1864 and died in 1933. He trained at the St John’s Wood School of Art and later at London’s prestigious Royal Academy Schools. He developed a wide career as a painter of figures, portraits, and landscapes, and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from the late 19th century. Today his work is represented in several public British collections, including the Government Art Collection and Reading Museum. The work is presented with an elaborate ornate gold frame, which complements the painting’s luminosity and color scheme especially well. The frame is considered a decorative element and is offered as a gift, and therefore will not be the subject of any claims arising from its condition. Overall, this is a beautiful and representative example of Charles Ernest Butler’s landscape facet, especially attractive for its rich color, luminosity, and garden theme, in addition to the added interest of it being a British artist with presence in major public collections. Condition: please study the photographs carefully, which form an integral part of the description and allow the current state of the work and the frame to be appreciated. The work will be professionally packaged to ensure proper protection during transport.
