Business letters signed by brokers or shipowners Cordier, Petit, Alès, and Simon, all from Rochefort; Caniot fils from Marans; and one from Hermelin of La Rochelle. Purchase, sale, and transport of oak and other types of timber for the Port of Rochefort, sourced from Indret, Rouen, Cherbourg, Marans, and various other locations. Sale of timber at the Rothschild and Nicolas markets. Arrival of timber rafts on rivers and canals via log driving. Chartering of vessels to retrieve the timber. Need for large-dimension timber for ocean liners. “The Port requires large timbers for the frigate that will be laid down in a few days. I will endeavor to obtain quotes from the various competitors who have offered to supply shipbuilding timber…” Supply of curved timbers, straight timbers, and knee timbers for shipbuilding. “The shipment of timber from Rouen contains pieces that greatly please the engineers. Without me, they would have dismantled all the large pieces from the hull of a steam frigate—whose launch has been delayed—to use them on another frigate that is urgently needed to be completed…” (Full of information)
