J. & J. Kohn – Antique Austrian Bentwood Armchair – Cane Seat – circa 1890 Catawiki Description An exceptional late 19th-century Austrian bentwood armchair by Jacob & Josef Kohn (J. & J. Kohn), dating from approximately 1890. The chair is a fine example of the celebrated Viennese bentwood furniture tradition. Its elegant construction features beautifully curved wooden elements, generously shaped armrests, a curved backrest and a traditional woven cane seat. Particularly noteworthy is the unusual and highly sculptural design of the armrests, supported by graceful bentwood curves. The proportions give the chair a remarkably elegant appearance from every angle. The underside retains the original J. & J. Kohn factory marking with “AUSTRIA”, confirming its historical Austrian manufacture. A photograph of the surviving mark is included in the listing. The woven cane seat is beautifully integrated into the circular wooden seat frame. The wood has developed an attractive warm colour and natural patina over more than a century. Manufacturer: Jacob & Josef Kohn (J. & J. Kohn) Country: Austria Period: circa 1890 Style: Viennese bentwood / Historicism Material: Bentwood and woven cane Marking: Original J. & J. Kohn / Austria factory mark The chair remains in attractive antique condition, showing natural signs of age and use, including minor scratches, colour variations and patina consistent with its age. These traces have intentionally been preserved and contribute to the authentic historical character of the piece. Please examine all photographs carefully, including the photograph of the original factory marking, as they form an integral part of the description.
