Malan was born in Geneva, Republic of Geneva, and from a young age was a devout Christian. After his education he left for Marseille, France, with the aim of pursuing a commercial training. Soon after, however, he went to the then still rationalist Academy of Geneva in preparation for the ministry. He was ordained a priest in 1810. Malan belonged to the Société des Amis, a group of conservative evangelical Christians in Geneva, which also included Merle d'Aubigne, Louis Gaussen, the Monod brothers, and others. In 1816–1817, during a visit to Geneva, the Scot Robert Haldane regularly met this group and taught about the letter to the Romans. This gave rise to a movement known as Le Réveil, which revived Protestant churches on the European continent, in Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and beyond. Malan was suspended as a pastor in 1818 because of an outspoken sermon he had delivered in 1817 on justification by faith alone (doctrinal preaching was then disapproved). After an apology and his reinstatement he was suspended again for similar sermons and in 1823 formally removed from his office. In 1820 Malan founded an independent church, l'Église du témoignage. After a period of intense growth, members of this church migrated from 1830 to another independent church. Malan was known for his high-Calvinist theology and somewhat autocratic manner, both of which contributed to decline. Malan traveled frequently outside Geneva and made regular trips to Great Britain (at least nine journeys between 1819 and 1863). During his stay in England and Scotland, Malan demonstrated his “effectiveness in personal conversations.” Among others, 'Rabbi' John Duncan credited his conversion to the ministry of the Geneva rabbi. Caesar Malan was the father of the orientalist and linguist Solomon Caesar Malan. Malan died and is buried in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland. Malan was one of the founders of the hymn movement in the French Reformed Church, and some of his hymns are still used to this day: “I will sing the praise of my Redeemer, And express all His love; Whose grace proclaims His faithfulness To the returning day.” Every day I will bless You — Hymn by Cesar Malan On the hymns of Caesar Malan, Julian the hymnologist wrote: “The spirit of Malan’s hymns lives on in the analysis of the Christian experience, in the inexhaustible description of the hope and fear, the joy and sorrow of the believing soul, which still forms the basis of French Protestant hymns.” Malan was also a prolific writer. He was very poetic in his writings and spoke to the heart through the Spirit, urging them to be reconciled with God.
