CAUS (Salomon de). Les Raisons des forces mouvantes, avec diverses Machines tant utiles que plaisantes : Ausquelles sont adjoints plusieurs desseins de Grotes & Fontaines. Paris, Hierosme Drouart, 1624. 3 parts in one in-folio volume, vellum, traces of laces (period binding). Expanded second edition of this fine 17th-century "theater of machines". Divided between two Parisian booksellers, Jérôme Drouart and Charles Sevestre, it is larger than the original edition published in Frankfurt in 1615. Born in Dieppe to a Protestant family, landscape architect and engineer Salomon de Caus (c. 1575-1626) worked for some of Europe's most illustrious princely courts: he laid out the gardens of Coudenberg Palace, the Brussels residence of Archduke Albert of Austria, those of the Prince of Wales at Greenwich and Sommerset House, and those of Heidelberg Castle for Elector Frederick V of the Palatinate. Close to Leonardo da Vinci in the breadth of his skills (Hélène Vérin), this Renaissance hydraulic engineer was a specialist in grottoes, fountains and waterworks, and contributed to the rise of mechanics as a scientific discipline in the early 17th century; in this respect, he is considered one of the precursors, if not the inventor, of steam power. (Hélène Vérin, "Salomon de Caus, un mécanicien praticien" in Revue de l'art, 2003/3, n°129, pp. 70-76). In this treatise, divided into three parts, the author sets out the fundamental laws specific to water, air and fire, and their application to the construction of his machines. In the first part, he describes ingenious automatons imitating birdsong (to counterfeit the voice of little goslings by means of water & air), clocks and hydraulic organs, a musical wheel and load-lifting machines equipped with pumps or driven by pinion wheels. The second section is devoted to grottoes and fountains, for use in palaces, pleasure homes and gardens, while the last section deals specifically with organ building. The illustrations include 2 architectural title-frontispieces, 63 copper engravings included in the pagination, several woodcuts in the text, and a double-page plate for the Sistesme, commonly known as the Diapason, used to measure organ pipes. Title-frontispiece of first part slightly soiled. Restoration in the lower margin and at the bottom of about fifteen leaves. Circulation a little weak at times. The plate for problem n°VI of the first part is glued on another engraving. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop
