RETRATO FEMENINO CATALÁN DEL SIGLO XIX Catalan School Illegible signature 19th Century Oil on canvas Dimensions of the work: 54 x 43 cm Dimensions with frame: 77 x 66 cm 1. IDENTIFICATION OF THE WORK 1.1. Title Catalan 19th-Century Female Portrait 1.2. Authorship and signature Signed at the lower area, though the signature is currently difficult to read due to surface darkening, the passage of time, and the overall condition of conservation. It prudently catalogs as a 19th-century Catalan school work, without a definite attribution to a specific author. 1.3. School and chronology The work belongs to the 19th-century Catalan school, within the tradition of bourgeois and domestic portraiture of the era. From the attire, composition, sober treatment of the face, and the stern background, it can be situated in a nineteenth-century context linked to intimate, domestic, and representative portraiture of Catalan society of the time. 1.4. Technique and support Oil on canvas. The painting is presented with a wood frame of substantial presence, with a wide moulding and interior gilded filet, which preserves an antique and sober character very suitable for the portrait. 1.5. Measurements Dimensions of the work: 54 x 43 cm. Overall dimensions with frame: 77 x 66 cm. 2. ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION 2.1. General composition The work depicts an adult woman portraited from the bust, dressed in black attire and placed against a neutral greenish background. The figure is slightly turned, with the face oriented toward the viewer, conveying a serene, firm, and deeply human presence. The composition is sober and frontal, focused on the dignity of the subject. There are no accessory elements to distract attention: everything concentrates on the facial expression, the contained posture, and the silent strength of the gaze. 2.2. The face and the expression The face is treated with sensitivity and observation. The subject’s expression carries a mix of serenity, gravity, and character. It is not excessively idealized; it preserves a psychologically truthful essence, typical of 19th-century portraits of a family or bourgeois character. The gaze, direct yet restrained, conveys an intimate presence. It is a painting that seeks truth rather than theatrics. 2.3. Attire and character of the era The woman appears dressed in black, with a high collar, front buttons, and puffed sleeves. These elements provide a clearly historical reading and reinforce the 19th-century chronology. The black of the attire, far from being flat, creates an elegant and solemn mass, contrasting with the illuminated face and the gray-green background. 2.4. Color and atmosphere The palette is sober, dominated by blacks, subdued greens, earth tones, and warm flesh tones. This chromatic restraint lends the portrait an austere, intimate, and very elegant beauty. The neutral background allows the figure to emerge clearly, without artifices. The work has a silent, ancient, and profoundly evocative atmosphere. 3. STYLE, SCHOOL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT 3.1. Style: realism Within the usual stylistic categories, the work can be classified as realism. It is a realist portraiture typical of the 19th century, focused on representing the physical and moral presence of the painted subject with sobriety, dignity, and psychological fidelity. 3.2. 19th-Century Catalan Portrait During the 19th century, portraiture held great importance in Catalonia as a genre linked to family memory, social representation, and bourgeois identity. This kind of work not only preserved the image of a person but also a way of understanding life, family, social position, and the dignity of the individual. 3.3. Beauty of austerity The interest of this painting lies precisely in its sobriety. It is not a decorative work in a superficial sense, but a portrait with presence, history, and discreet beauty. The power of the painting lies in its silence: in the contained expression, in the dark dress, in the sober background, and in that gaze that seems to have crossed time. 4. CONDITION 4.1. General condition The work is in acceptable condition, given its age, and shows visible signs of the passage of time. There are signs of wear, darkening, surface dirt, small marks, craquelure, irregularities, and areas with restorations or unfinished interventions. 4.2. Unfinished restorations The painting shows unfinished restorations, visible especially in certain areas of the surface and the overall aspect of the canvas. This is stated transparently so that the buyer can assess the work both in its current state and its potential for conservation and future improvement. 4.3. Support and verso The back shows an old canvas mounted on a wooden frame. There are stains, fabric oxidation, old patches or interventions, adhesive residues, and signs of the passage of time. The whole retains an old structure and materiality very interesting for collectors sensitive to the history of the object. 4.4. Frame The work is presented with an antique wooden frame, with wide moulding and interior gilded filet. The frame shows visible signs of use, wear, stains, rubbing, and aging, but contributes a very special presence coherent with the painting. Its antique character adds to the historical appeal of the collection. 4.5. Photographs The photographs are an essential part of the description. They should be examined carefully, as they show the painting, the frame, the illegible signature, the reverse, restorations, and the true condition of conservation. 5. GUARANTEE AND TRANSPARENCY 5.1. Original work Offered as an original oil on canvas work, belonging to the 19th-century Catalan school. 5.2. Illegible signature The work presents a signature or inscription in the lower area, currently illegible or not securely identified. For this reason, it is not attributed to a specific author. The cataloging is done prudently and honestly. 5.3. State described with transparency The work is sold in acceptable condition, with signs of age and unfinished restorations. This condition does not prevent appreciating its aesthetic, historical, and decorative value, but it must be taken into account by the buyer. 5.4. Professional packaging The work will be shipped with professional packaging, using materials suitable to protect both the oil and the frame during transport. It will be carefully prepared to ensure safe delivery. 6. COLLECTING OPPORTUNITY 6.1. A work with historical presence This portrait retains a very special presence. It is an old, sober, and honest painting that transmits the dignity of a distant era and the silent memory of a real person. The female figure, dressed in black and portrayed with great restraint, possesses an emotional strength that directly connects with the tradition of 19th-century European portraiture. 6.2. Old beauty and sensitivity Some works do not need grand gestures to move. This portrait attracts precisely because of its austerity, its truth, and its intimate character. The subject’s gaze, the severity of the dress, and the subdued background create an image of great sensitivity, ideal for those who value old paintings with soul. 6.3. Potential for restoration The work may especially interest collectors, restorers, decorators, or art lovers who can appreciate an ancient piece with room for improvement. Its unfinished restorations open the possibility of a future professional intervention to better recover its aesthetic reading. 6.4. Decorative piece with character Due to its dimensions, its antique frame, and its sober presence, it is a highly suitable work for classic interiors, libraries, offices, private galleries, characterful homes, or spaces seeking a painting with history and personality. 6.5. Commercial closing An original oil painting on canvas, from the 19th-century Catalan school, with an illegible signature and unfinished restorations. A sober, ancient, and deeply evocative female portrait, ideal for lovers of historical art and works with memory.
