Castagna Maurizio 1961 - XL - Prima della Forma

Maurizio Castagna – Before the Form In Before the Form, Maurizio Castagna condenses over fifty years of painting research into a composition of intense energy, in which matter, gesture, and visual memory seem to precede any possibility of representation. Trained at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin and present in his career’s publications in art such as Bolaffi and Giorgio Mondadori, Castagna progressively abandoned the boundaries of figurativeness to develop a personal language founded on the stratification of the surface, the force of the sign, and material experimentation. In this work the turquoise-green ground becomes a deep, indefinite space from which vertical structures, lattices, engravings, and large spiral movements emerge. Earth tones, ferruginous reds, blacks, and sudden orange accents cross the surface like fragments of a reality in formation. Some elements seem to evoke architectures, scaffolds, or artefacts; others take on an organic, almost cellular character. Yet every possible recognition is immediately contradicted by the subsequent gesture, leaving the image suspended on the boundary between construction and dissolution. The compositional tension arises mainly from the contrast between the verticalities of the central part and the circular movement that dominates the right. The apparent stability of the structures is opposed by the energy of the spiral, an ancestral figure of expansion and return. The black mark runs through and connects these elements like an archaic writing: it incises, delineates, and traverses the matter without ever transforming into a fully decipherable code. The title Before the Form thus introduces an essential key to interpretation. Castagna seems to investigate not the completed form, but the moment that precedes it: the moment when matter, color, and gesture already possess a direction, yet have not yet assumed a definitive identity. The painting becomes the place of a genesis, in which order and chaos are not opposing terms, but forces necessary to one another. The complexity of the surface reveals, to a prolonged look, a precise internal balance. The densest zones are balanced by the openings of the background; in response to the sedimented matter are rapid and instinctive signs; against the monumental vertical structures is opposed the dynamism of circular forms. The work thus preserves the physicality of the painting process and, at the same time, a deeply evocative dimension. Before the Form situates itself in the mature phase of Maurizio Castagna’s research, an artist with long experience who has made the contamination between techniques, matter, and gesture one of the central elements of his path. The canvas does not propose a closed narrative, but deliberately preserves the possibility of multiple readings: an imaginary city, an organism, a relic, an inner landscape, or a pure painting construction. It is precisely in the moment when the eye attempts to assign a name to what it sees that the image seems to transform again, returning to being matter: before the form."
