CARMONTELLE (Louis Carrogis, dit). Jardin de Monceau, near Paris, belonging to His Serene Highness Monseigneur le Duc de Chartres. Paris, Delafosse, Née & Masquelier, 1779. Large folio, speckled fawn half-calf with corners, smooth spine decorated with fillets, burgundy title page (Binding circa 1900). First edition, illustrated with a general plan of the garden and 17 attractive copper-engraved plates after drawings by Carmontelle. The painter Carmontelle (1717-1806), portraitist to the aristocracy and organizer of festivities and shows renowned throughout the capital, was commissioned by the Duc de Chartres, the future Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (1747-1793), to create a place for pleasure and meetings at his Monceau estate. For this prince, he created one of the finest gardens of the 18th century, known as the Folie de Chartres or Folie-Mousseaux, today the Parc Monceau in Paris. A proponent of garden design that combines illusion and fantasy, Carmontelle conceived an Anglo-Chinese landscape garden dotted with extravagant, fashionable fabrications (ruined castle, Gothic tower, ancient temple and edifice, Chinese pagoda, Tartar tent, Dutch mill, tombs, etc.): "If we can turn a picturesque garden into a land of illusions, why refuse to do so? [...] Let's transpose the stage changes of opera to our gardens [...]. Since we have to create everything, let's use this freedom to please, to amuse & to interest. This was what those who came to see the Jardin de Monceau expected to find (p. 4). A rare copy in period colors, which exalts the charm of the compositions. Enclosed in the volume is a receipt signed by Carmontelle, on vellum, attesting to having received from M. Loiseau de Bérenger, Trésorier General of the Duc d'Orléans, the sum of 450 livres for his first quarter wages for the year 1785 as reader to S.A.R. From the libraries of Hippolyte Destailleur, G. de Berny, Francis Kettaneh and Jean-François Chaponnière (2019, no. 36). Skilful and small paper restorations on the edge of the title. Minimal crack restored on the edge of the plan. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop
