Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - Herrn Professor Gellerts...

Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel: Herrn Professor Gellerts Geistliche Oden und Lieder mit Melodien. Third Edition. (AND:) Twelve spiritual odes and songs as an appendix to Gellert's spiritual odes and songs with melodies. Second edition. 2 parts in 1 volume. Berlin, Georg Ludewig Witwe 1764. Both titles with woodcut ornamental border. With music set in type. 2 leaves, 60 pages. 1 leaf, 13 pages. Neuer HLdr. 26.5 x 31.5 cm. Woutquenne 194-195; Bitter I, 142 f. See Wolffheim 2097. - Third edition of the first song work by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, first issued in 1758 and published in several editions but rare. - Although Gellert had indicated a number of chorale melodies to which his odes and songs could be sung, among German musicians there arose a veritable competition to compose the most beautiful melodies to this work, so that in the 18th century no collection of songs by a German poet was set to music as often (besides Bach among others by Quantz, Hiller, Schmidlin, Hesse, Rolle, Egli up to Haydn and Beethoven) and none was disseminated as widely as that of Gellert. "With this beautiful and noble work Em. Bach has become the founder and creator of the German Lied in its present significance." (Bitter I, p. 142f). - On the first title page a green seal mark with the name H.A.W. and the years 1716-1776. In "Bach digital" of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin there is a transcription of a work by C. P. E. Bach, likewise with this mark, or there with a dry stamp. "Bach digital" notes: "The oval green-white dry stamp 'H. A. W. | 1716-1776' (20th century) very likely does not point to an earlier owner named 'H. A. W.' (see sources D-Hs Cod. in scrin.: 36 and D-Hs Cod. in scrin.: 37). The dry stamp found in many sources thus leads to a dead end (it may be a deliberate deception)." - Both title pages with the signature Georg-Adolf Walter, Düsseldorf 1904. The tenor Walter (1875-1952) was indeed known for his interpretations of Johann Sebastian and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach; two historical recordings are accessible on YouTube. - Good and clean copy!
