CARION (Jean). The Chronicles of Jean Carion. Including the - Lot 43

CARION (Jean). The Chronicles of Jean Carion. Including the deeds and exploits of King Francis, up to the reign of King Henry II of that name, currently reigning. Paris, Veuve Guillaume Le Bret, 1551. In-16, red shagreen, triple gilt rule, decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (Allô). A rare edition of this famous universal chronicle attributed to Jean Carion (1499–1537), a German astrologer and mathematician who was a student of Philip Melanchthon. This edition is based on the translation by Jean Le Blond (1502–1553), who produced the first French version of this work in 1547. A handwritten note, apparently erased, appears on the title page. The last folio, V8, is missing (this folio should be blank, according to the collation—identical to ours—provided in the CCFr based on a 1551 copy held in Le Mans, addressed to Jean Ruelle in Paris).
