Tetraptychon Materico The work before us is a square of squares. Four monochrome canvases (each measuring 40x40 cm) seemingly simple, which in their silent dialogue construct a complex discourse on matter, gesture, and color. Matter as language We are facing pure matter painting, direct heir of Burri and Fontana, yet stripped of any drama. Painting is no longer paint laid on; it is a body. Plaster, mortar, acrylic sand accumulated and then dug out. The gesture is the real protagonist. Not brushwork, but impression. In the upper left, white on white: a concentric spiral, almost a giant fingerprint, a tactile labyrinth. It is the absence that becomes presence. The color is absent, and yet everything is there: light, shadow, the memory of the finger that traced the circles. In the upper right, yellow. The same circular gesture is broken, interrupted at the center as a planet divided into two hemispheres. Here the matter is chunkier, tenser, almost furious. The yellow is not sunny; it is acidic, industrial, deliberately artificial. In the lower left, emerald green, deep turquoise. The gesture changes: from circular to linear, horizontal, stratified like a geological cross-section or the waves left by a low tide. It is the only panel where the trace seems collective, a series of parallel grooves that suggest time, sedimentation, writing. In the lower right, the dove gray, beige-concrete. The circle returns, but this time it is a shadow, a faded, worn imprint. It is the memory of the gesture of the other three panels, almost erased. A tetralogy of feeling The strength of this tetraptych lies in the perfect balance between unity and variation. Same alphabet—the groove—declined in four different dialects. It is not a work to look at; it is a work to caress with the eyes. Photography does it no justice because it flattens what was born to create shadow. Raking light is an integral part of the work: it is what sculpts the reliefs and brings the monochrome to life. Cromatically it is a bold and contemporary choice. White, primary yellow, teal, and greige. They are the colors of design, interiors, post-industrial minimalism. The artist knows that today the painting must inhabit a space, not just a museum wall. Ultimately, it is a work that speaks of trace and absence. Of how much a person leaves behind even when one believes to leave nothing. Each panel is a fossil of a gesture, a fingerprint of the soul. Four different silences that, together, make a dull and beautiful noise.
