Camillo Gannelli - Braciere

HEARTH There is a painting you don’t look at; you feel it on the skin. Everything starts from the bottom: a deep, dense, tactile red, almost lava-like. It isn’t a flat red; it’s a paste of spatula, of layers, of grooves. It looks like burnt earth, red-hot iron, a field after the fire. The higher you go, the red lightens, it oxidizes, becomes ochre, amber, a smoky sulfur yellow, as if the heat were evaporating. The painting is all gesture. You can see circular, wide movements, like moon-sickle shapes drawn with the hand. Interrupted circles surface and disappear, traces of a slow vortex. There’s no figure, there is a movement of warm air. And then the stroke of genius that holds it all together: four small patches of turquoise. A cold blue, almost electric, minuscule compared to the incandescent mass. They aren’t decoration; they are breath. They are drops of water sizzling on the embers, glimpses of sky on a scorching day. That’s why the work works. Without that blue it would be only power. With that blue it becomes balance. Warm and cold. Matter and light. Earth and air. It’s an abstract that recalls the noblest Italian Informal (art) but with its own temperature. It isn’t dramatic; it’s vital. It gives you a sense of domestic, ancestral warmth all at once, like standing in front of an oven, at a August sunset, at a burning hearth in the night. A 50x50 cm canvas, in format, monumental in feeling. The photos are stage setups to show roughly how it might appear.
