Camille Clovis Trouille (1889–1975) - Album

Camille Clovis Trouille (1889–1975). "Album", 1968. Photo-collage album with red velvet covers and 16 assembled reproductions of the artist's works. Six pages. 27.9 cm x 16.5 cm. Multiple from the *S.M.S.* (Shit Must Stop) Portfolio #2, April 1968. A contribution by the French Surrealist artist to the famous portfolios published by William Copley and Dimitri Petrov between February and December 1968. Publisher: The Letter Edged in Black Press, New York, 1968. Edition of approximately 2,000 copies, many of which have been lost (experts estimate the surviving number to be between 800 and 1,000). This copy has minor flaws (a small stain on the back cover). It is exactly as received via the 1968 subscription. Please see the photographs. The *SMS* portfolios—inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s famous *Boîte-en-valise* and, more broadly, by the irreverence of the Dada movement and the multiples of the Fluxus movement—represented a reaction against the elitism of the art world. They did this by delivering, via regular subscription, works by artists whom we now consider among the most significant of the 20th century (Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Joseph Kosuth, Meret Oppenheim, Man Ray, John Cage, Bernar Venet, Mel Ramos, Walter de Maria, Christo Javacheff, Dieter Roth, Claes Oldenburg, etc.). The *Shit Must Stop* releases lasted barely a year due to the rising costs of production and distribution. A precursor to Pop Art in the age of mechanical reproduction, Clovis Trouille embodies the irreverent artist—standing out even among the irreverent French artists of the 20th century—and serves as a uniquely scathing critic of intellectualism in art.. There is extensive bibliographical documentation on the revolutionary SMS portfolios. Highlights include: - SMS. A Collection of Original Multiples.
