Native American, Caddo. A rounded earthenware jar rises from a softly tapering base to an everted, gently flaring rim, its surface a quiet record of the potter's hand. Beneath the lip, encircling bands of punctate and zoned incising frame the neck, a crisp ribbon of ornament set against the burnished collar. Below, the swelling body is given over to brushed and vertically combed striations that pull downward like windswept grass, catching fire-clouds of soot and tan across the buff ground. Built by coiling and pit-fired, the vessel served domestic ends, the storage and serving of food and drink within a Caddo household of the Trans-Mississippi South. Its restrained geometry and textural body speak to a ceramic tradition prized for technical control and an understated, confident sense of design. The Caddo peoples of the Red River valley, spanning present-day eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, produced some of the most accomplished pottery in pre-contact North America. Their workshops are known for fine pastes, lustrous burnishing, and a vocabulary of engraved scrolls, punctations, and brushed surfaces. The combed or brushed treatment seen across this body is characteristic of utilitarian jar forms, where vertical striations both decorated the surface and improved grip and durability, while the neatly incised neck registered the potter's care for proportion and finish.
