Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine Empire. A slender hoop hammered into eight shallow facets, rising through tapered shoulders to a flat ovoid face set nearly flush with the band. The bezel carries no engraved device, its surface burnished smooth and holding faint traces of the planishing hammer. Construction is direct and economical: a single worked strip closed into a circle, the shoulders flowing into the faceted band so the profile reads as one continuous line. Rings of this form served as personal ornament and, when engraved, as sealing devices; an uninscribed face such as this may have been left for later personalization or simply worn plain. XRF analysis returns roughly 84 percent fine gold, consistent with the high-purity metal circulating across the Byzantine world and alloyed only lightly for working strength. Byzantine goldsmiths worked largely from recycled coin, and the solidus of Constantinople held its nominal purity for centuries, a stability that underwrote Mediterranean commerce long after the western mints had debased. An assay near 84 percent fine reflects that inheritance: gold thinned slightly with silver and copper for durability, yet far richer than the alloys standard in modern jewelry. The faceted or polygonal hoop is a recurring Byzantine preference, echoed in the octagonal marriage rings inscribed with benedictions and in the multi-sided bands carrying monograms and cruciform legends, where each flat face could receive a letter or a punched motif. Here the facets are left unlettered, the geometry retained for its own sake. Item # 205226
