A tall five-part granite ‘buried’ garden lantern, known as Rokkaku ikekomi’dôrô 六角活け込み燈籠, of hexagonal form and carved from softly toned grey granite. The lower section consists of a cylindrical sao 竿 (post), designed to be partially buried in the ground and symbolising chi 地 (earth). Above this rests the chûdai 中台 (platform), representing sui 水 (water), carved with lotus leaves. The central hibukuro 火袋 (fire box) is particularly unusual in design. The insert is rectangular opposite sides, and the other sides with a lattice work impression, creating an architectural form. This part represents ka 火 (fire), as it originally housed the light source. Above rises a broad, elegantly curved kasa 傘 (roof), symbolising fû 風 (air), finished with a tall finial representing kû 空 (void or spirit). Together, these five sections reflect the traditional Buddhist cosmological association of the lantern with the five elements. Approx. dimensions: Height 134 cm, Width 54 cm, Depth 45 cm. Part of the base intended to be buried: 15 cm. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926). In very good condition, with natural traces of outdoor exposure and a weathered surface consistent with age. Tiny chips base. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. We will use a wooden pallet and secure packing for safe transport. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
