Bulgaria - Gulf of Bourgas (Burgas); Pierre Lapie...

Rare and valuable hydrographic and military map from the Napoleonic era depicting the Gulf of Bourgas (today Burgas in Bulgaria), a historic outpost on the Black Sea that at the time of publication was under the dominion of the Ottoman Empire in the Rumelia region. This refined copper-engraved plate has been drawn by the famous colonel and French geographical engineer Pierre Lapie (1777–1850) and bears in the upper cartouche the official edition year 1809. The work was originally published in Paris within the well-known scientific periodical "Annales des Voyages, de la Géographie et de l'Histoire" to accompany a detailed nautical and strategic reconnaissance of the area. The map is distinguished by its extremely technical precision, capillarily detailing the coastline, coastal topographic relief described with fine academic hatching, the wind roses with their rhombus lines, and a dense series of bathymetric soundings for calculating the depths of the seabed, essential for military navigation of the era. In the bottom left, the plate is completed by a panel with several graphic scales of measurement ("Échelles"). The engraving of the geometries is masterfully executed by Chamouin, while the typographic characters were cared for by the calligrapher Giraldon. Dimensions 32 x 45 cm Will be shipped by courier
