Buddha with a flaming aureole and guardian figures –...

For sale is this exceptional and elaborately crafted bronze depiction of a seated Buddha in the Thai style from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects. The Buddha sits in a meditative posture on a large, multi-tiered and richly ornamented pedestal. The right hand is lowered to the knee, while the left hand rests in the lap with the palm facing upward. This representation corresponds to the Thai Buddha figures' typical Bhumisparsha Mudra, the gesture of touching the earth. Particularly striking is the large, intricately decorated flaming aureole that frames the Buddha. It tapers to a point over the head and features sideways curved, flame-like ornaments. This large arch is detachable and is attached to the pedestal via connectors. On both sides of the Buddha there are additionally two small, three-dimensionally carved guardian/attendant figures in traditional Thai design. The pedestal is also very finely worked. On the front there is a hanging, relief decorative element with a small figurative representation. The bronze has a predominantly gold-bronze color with a lustrous surface in places. In the recesses as well as on the aureole, the accompanying figures and certain pedestal areas, a darker patina and signs of oxidation have formed, making the ornaments stand out clearly. On several components there is the engraved or stamped number “15.” This is visible on the back of the aureole and on the side of the pedestal, among other places. Its meaning or attribution is not known; it is therefore not interpreted as a maker’s mark or an age designation. Dimensions & Weight: Height approx. 28 cm, Width approx. 20 cm, Depth approx. 12 cm, Weight approx. 1,928 g (1.928 kg). Material: Bronze. Construction: cast, multi-part. Flaming aureole/arc detachable. Style/Origin: Thailand / Southeast Asian Buddhism. Condition: used and showing signs of age and use. Visible are patina, oxidation and discoloration traces, wear, scratches, as well as occasional darker deposits and minor surface or casting irregularities. In some areas the surface shows wear or changes in the gold appearance. The connectors of the detachable elements also show signs of use. The underside of the pedestal is open and shows noticeable casting, patina and aging marks. A precise dating has not been performed. The number “15” does not, as far as current knowledge goes, serve as proof of age or maker. The photos are part of the condition description.
