Buddha under the Bodhi tree with two elephants – Bronze

For sale: this extraordinary bronze representation of a Buddha under a stylized Bodhi tree, from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects. At the center is the slim Buddha figure with a tranquil expression, characteristically worked hair curls and an elevated Ushnisha. The robe fits close to the body and is suggested by simple, long-drawn folds. Behind Buddha rises a large, stylized Bodhi tree, whose branches and leaves decoratively frame the figure. The tree representation continues down into the base, whose sides feature a pronounced texture reminiscent of tree bark. Particularly interesting are the two elephants at Buddha's feet. They are located to the right and left of the central figure and have their trunks raised upward. This gives the bronze an unusual and highly decorative scenic composition. The bronze has a predominantly dark brown to almost black patina. In places there are greenish-turquoise oxidation traces as well as lighter wear markings that highlight individual contours and details. Dimensions & weight: Height ≈ 25 cm, Width ≈ 11 cm, Depth ≈ 11 cm, Weight ≈ 1.244 kg. Material: Bronze. Finish: cast and dark patinated. Depiction: Buddha under Bodhi tree with two elephants. Style/Origin: Southeast Asia. Condition is used and shows signs of age and use. Present are varying patina, oxidation and discoloration traces, wear and deposits as well as minor casting and surface irregularities. In places there is a greenish patination or oxidation. The underside also shows noticeable deposits and oxidation traces. The patina present has not been removed and is part of the piece’s appearance.
