Powered by two five-pole motors with a cardan in the middle. This giant was the largest and heaviest E-loco (electric locomotive) in German railway history to date. Epoch V/III DR Number built: 6 units Construction years: 1927 Withdrawn from service: 1969 Max. speed: 70 km/h The Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft commissioned AEG in 1924 to build a heavy electric locomotive capable of pulling a coal train of 2,200 tons and a passenger train of 530 tons through mountainous terrain at a speed of 45 km/h. The maximum speed was specified as 65 km/h. The locomotives also had to be divisible so they could be maintained at smaller maintenance depots. AEG designed a locomotive with a 1’Co+Co1’ wheel arrangement, of which the DRG ordered six in 1926. The locomotives were delivered from late 1927 to June 1928 and were classified as construction series E 95 with works numbers E 95 01 through E 95 06. The locomotives hauled the heavy coal trains on the Waldenburg-Dittersbach and Görlitz routes until 1930. After that, the number of coal trains declined sharply and the locomotives were increasingly used to haul passenger trains.
