At this time, the artist began to paint more and more with gouache, "the poor man's oil". Although he did little work during the war, he resumed painting after the Liberation, preparing an exhibition in Paris with Lyon gallery owner Marcel Michaud, before a major show with his brother Geer van Velde at Galerie Maeght in 1948, also in Paris. This canvas, dated 1944 at the time of the 1948 exhibition at Galerie Maeght, and re-dated by Rainer Michael Mason in the catalog of the 1996 centenary retrospective in Geneva, is a true document, one of the few works he produced during the war. The canvas was double-sided when Rainer Michael Mason first saw it in 1989, in the company of Catherine Putman and Claire Stoullig. In the Musée Rath exhibition catalog, he explains that it was restored around 1989-90: the painting had then been transposed by reducing its dimensions, and the underpainting saved (fig. 4 p. 122 of the 1996 catalog). What he calls the underpainting is the verso, reproduced below, sold by Boisgirard at Drouot on January 27, 2002.
