Box - tricket box - Vintage Mexican Alpaca & Abalone...

Vintage Mexican Alpaca & Abalone Keepsake Box – Attributed to the Salvador Terán, c. 1960 Beautiful mid-century Mexican decorative box, finely constructed in alpaca (Mexican silver) and extensively decorated with hand-cut abalone shell mosaic. The highly iridescent shell displays spectacular natural shades of turquoise, green, blue, violet, pink and mother-of-pearl. Individual pieces have been carefully arranged across the hinged lid and around the sides of the box, creating a particularly attractive mosaic effect. The underside is stamped “ALPACA / HECHO EN MEXICO”. The design and construction are strongly comparable with mid-century Mexican boxes associated with the Salvador Terán / Taxco decorative arts tradition, including documented examples described as “after Salvador Terán”. The present box is therefore offered as attributed to the Salvador Terán, rather than as a signed Terán piece. The box retains its original black-coloured interior lining and small raised feet. Period: circa 1960s Origin: Mexico Materials: Alpaca and abalone shell Dimensions: approximately 10.5 × 7 × 2.2 cm Mark: “ALPACA / HECHO EN MEXICO” Condition: Good vintage condition, with expected age-related wear to the alpaca surface and some minor imperfections to the shell mosaic. The hinge functions correctly and the box remains structurally sound. Please examine the photographs carefully, which form part of the description. A particularly attractive example of Mexican mid-century decorative arts, combining the luminous natural colour of abalone with the characteristic silver-coloured alpaca metalwork.
