Four stoneware rice bowls Origin: Vung Tau Cargo (sea findings auctioned at Christie’s 1992). China, Kangxi. These bowls belonged to the so-called provincial wares or utilitarian ceramics aboard. The specific characteristics can be directly traced to this maritime find. Glaze and Color: They bear a typical greenish celadon-type or grayish glaze, which, through centuries of exposure to seawater and salt, has developed a distinctive matte, slightly worn texture. Auction labels: The white stickers/labels on the side and the stand ring (as visible on the selected bowls) are the original Christie’s auction lot stickers from the 1992 sale. Example sticker 120 968: Lot 968: The bottom number 968 refers to the original lot number from Christie’s Amsterdam auction catalog of April 1992. This specific lot at the time consisted of a set of such stoneware provincial bowls from the Vung Tau Cargo. Lot description: Under this lot number the bowls were described at the time as provincial wares from the Kangxi period (ca. 1690), documented with their characteristic matte glaze defects that formed over centuries on the seabed. 120: The number 120 above is an internal reference, often linked to the old box or administrative sorting during the cataloging of tens of thousands of porcelain pieces recovered from the wreck. Thanks to this sticker, it is tangible evidence of the legal provenance from this world-famous maritime auction. Condition: As is usual with sea finds, the bowls show minimal rim wear, small manufacturing flaws, or slight discoloration from their time on the seabed.
