Boch Frères Keramis - Raymond Henri Chevallier...

Boch Frères Keramis - Art Deco vase with gilded ear-like handles - Decor D.2940, Form 896 - Belgium Description Beautiful and rare Art Deco vase manufactured by the famous Belgian factory Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière. designed by Raymond Henri Chevallier This cylindrical vase with a stepped neck and base is executed in the iconic Art Deco décor D.2940 (form number 896). The vase features stylized, gilded 'ear' handles on either side. The décor consists of a rich floral motif with pink and blue flowers, brown leaves and refined gold accents against a cream-colored background. The interior is finished with a turquoise glaze. On the bottom, fully marked with Boch Frères La Louvière stamp, the decor number D.2940 and the impressed form number 896. Manufacturer: Boch Frères Keramis (La Louvière, Belgium) Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by the Boch family (known for Villeroy & Boch) in La Louvière. The factory grew to become the absolute flagship of Belgian ceramics. They were renowned for their high-quality earthenware (faience), innovative glaze techniques, and artistic experimentation throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Designer: Raymond Henri Chevallier (1900–1959) The specific décor of this vase (D.2940, named "Shanghai") was designed by Raymond Chevallier. Chevallier succeeded Charles Catteau as artistic director at Boch Frères in 1937. While Catteau was known for clean, geometric and stylized Art Deco motifs, Chevallier brought a more romantic, luxurious twist to the late Art Deco/Neo-Baroque style. A hallmark of his work from this period are the rich gold accents, floral patterns inspired by Asian motifs (such as the Shanghai décor) and the strikingly stylized, gilded handles or 'ears'. Style and Period: Late Art Deco (ca. 1937–1945) Style: Late Art Deco with neoclassical and Orientalist influences. The vase’s clean, stepped form and angular ears are typical of Art Deco, while the floral décor and the abundant use of gold reflect the luxurious transition style popular at the end of the 1930s. The décor D.2940, officially named "Shanghai", is with 100% certainty registered as a design by Raymond Henri Chevallier, who in 1937 succeeded Charles Catteau as artistic director at Boch Frères Keramis. This attribution is based on the official factory archives of La Louvière and is confirmed in standard reference works on Belgian Art Deco (such as that by Marc Pairon) and auction catalogues. The vase exudes Chevallier’s characteristic luxurious style from the late 1930s, recognizable by the East Asian-inspired floral motif, the turquoise interior, and the abundant, precisely carved gold accents and gilded 'ears'. Period: Late 1930s to early 1940s. Specifications: Manufacturer: Boch Frères Keramis (La Louvière, Belgium) Period: ca. 1930 (Art Deco) Decor number: D.2940 Form number: 896 Height: 23 cm Width: 15 cm Weight: 840 grams Condition: In excellent used condition with minor signs of age and use, appropriate for its age.
