DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a truly imposing and aristocratic specimen, both for its significance in Christian patristics and for its overwhelming value in the antiquarian book market: the definitive critical edition of the Opera of Saint Cyprian of Carthage (c. 200–258 AD), printed in Paris in 1726 by the legendary Typographia Regia (Royal Printing Office of Louis XV). This monumental edition was prepared by the famous scholar Étienne Baluze (Stephani Baluzii) and completed by the Benedictine monks of the Congregation of Saint Maur, the leading authority in paleography and edition of patristic texts in the eighteenth century. It is a volume of colossal dimensions (5 kg in weight and 40 x 27 cm), in an exceptional state of preservation.
