A very attractive original 1973 Japanese Polydor edition documenting some of the earliest professional recordings connected with The Beatles. The key recordings date from the group's Hamburg period in 1961, before Ringo Starr joined the band, with Pete Best on drums. Producer Bert Kaempfert recorded The Beatles backing Tony Sheridan at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg, yielding My Bonnie, The Saints, Why and Nobody's Child, among others. Particularly fascinating are "Ain't She Sweet," featuring John Lennon on lead vocal, and "Cry For A Shadow," the rare Lennon/Harrison instrumental composition recorded by The Beatles without Sheridan. The original My Bonnie single would become historically important in the story of Brian Epstein discovering the group. It is worth noting that several Tony Sheridan tracks included on this compilation were recorded without The Beatles, making this an anthology of the wider Hamburg/Polydor period rather than a pure Beatles album. ⸻ Sleeve (VG+): The gatefold sleeve is clean and solid overall, remaining very attractive with the original OBI still present. Some age-related yellowing and staining is visible on the rear, and there is a small sticker on the front. Apart from these minor marks, the example is well preserved, grading a strong VG+. Insert / OBI: Original Japanese OBI and original Japanese insert both included. Vinyl (NM): Superb condition with an excellent deep shine and hardly any evidence of handling or play.
