ATTRIBUTED TO SALVATOR ROSA (1615-1673) Study of a Figure exorcising a Demon, pen and brown ink, and brown wash , 6 3/4 x 4 in Provenance:; Mabel Chappell (1878-1950), thence by family descent. This drawing is to have been owned by Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) before passing into the ownership of Mabel Chappell. Sir William Gilbert possessed a significant art collection, in part supported by the immense wealth that he earned from the global success of the Savoy Operas such as The Mikado and H.M.S Pinafore. The collection was displayed at Gilbert's country house Grim's Dyke, at Harrows Weald, Middlesex. It included works by or attributed to Tintoretto, Giorgione, Jan Van de Capelle and Caesar Van Everdingen. An ink inscription on the mount of the drawing at Minster states that 'it was given by Sir W.S. Gilbert to Miss Mabel Chappell in 1905'. Mabel Chappell (1878-1950) was a member of the Chappell music publishing family. She married Robert Fleetwood Fuller in 1907, and later with him, restored and eventually gifted the mediaeval Great Chalford Manor to the National Trust in 1943.
