Astronomia - Copernican system and diagrams of...

Technical data Title: Copernicus System, with diagrams of astronomy and mathematical geography. Author/Engraver: Filippo Naymiller, signed in the lower left margin «Filippo Naymiller dis. ed inc.». Draftsman: Filippo Naymiller. Publisher: Giacomo Gnocchi, publisher and bookseller. Place: Milan. Epoch: Second half of the 19th century, about 1860–1870; updated to the discoveries of 1857. Technique: Lithography with contemporaneous coloring. Support: Paper. Dimensions: Sheet 32.5 × 45.5 cm; engraving 30.5 × 40.5 cm, measurements given height × width. Composition: Single plate, numbered 1 in the upper right corner, with eight explanatory figures and scientific tables; vertical center fold. Description Plate of astronomy and mathematical geography drawn and engraved by Filippo Naymiller and published in Milan by Giacomo Gnocchi. The composition brings together on a single sheet an articulated apparatus of diagrams intended to illustrate the main concepts of cosmography and land representation. At the center dominates the “Copernican System,” with the Sun and the orbits of the planets up to Neptune, the asteroid belt, and the path of a comet. Around this scheme are arranged a wind rose, representations of parallels and degrees of latitude, of meridians and degrees of longitude, of the ecliptic with the zodiac signs, an armillary sphere, and the globe divided into climatic zones. In the lower right corner a diagram compares the inclination of the orbits of the planets and asteroids with respect to the plane of Earth's orbit. Completing the ensemble are tables of mean distances from the Sun, a reference to Kepler’s laws, and the list of the “Last asteroids discovered up to 1857,” a significant element for dating the edition. An ornamental border with vegetal and floral motifs envelopes the composition, while the hand coloring distinguishes the different parts of the schemes and aids reading. Historical-artistic note Filippo Naymiller was active in Milan’s 19th-century cartographic publishing scene as a designer and engraver. His work fits into the spread of atlases and illustrated tools for teaching geography, where graphical precision and explanatory clarity were paired with a decorative apparatus still tied to the tradition of engraved maps. This plate testifies to the integration of astronomy and mathematical geography in the didactic culture of the period. The presence of Neptune and the update of the asteroid list to 1857 document an edition attentive to the scientific advances of the mid-century. The numbering and the compositional layout suggest an atlas-oriented purpose; the exact edition of origin has not been ascertained. Condition Report Vertical center crease with a slight browning along the fold. Paper shows slight yellowing, scattered small stains and pinpoint foxing. Minor signs of handling and irregularities along the margins. Contemporaneous coloring and verso blank of text.
