Arturo Bonanomi (1920-2010) - Winter at the Railway Depot

This oil painting attributed to Arturo Bonanomi (1920–2010) depicts a snow-covered railway yard with steam locomotives, freight wagons and railway buildings. Viewed from an elevated perspective, the composition reveals a network of tracks winding between rows of stationary wagons. On the right, a black steam locomotive stands prominently against the snow, while a second locomotive and a dark freight wagon occupy the foreground. A dense column of smoke rises through the centre of the painting, partially obscuring the buildings in the distance. The composition is distinguished by its contrasting warm and cool tones. Reddish-brown railway wagons and dark locomotives stand against expanses of white, silver-grey and pale blue snow. The subdued winter sky and smoke are rendered in broad, sweeping brushstrokes, while shorter, more defined touches describe the railway equipment and buildings. Small figures among the wagons establish a sense of scale. The painting combines impressionistic brushwork with expressive, figurative realism. Its energetic handling of paint is particularly evident in the smoke, snow-covered roofs and dark surfaces of the locomotives. The work bears a Bonanomi signature in the lower left corner. Largely self-taught, he developed a figurative style characterised by vigorous brushwork, strong tonal contrasts and a direct approach to landscape and architectural subjects. His paintings frequently depict mountain villages, rural landscapes and historic streets, particularly in the region surrounding Lake Como and Lecco. His work is recognisable for its simplified forms, expressive application of paint and atmospheric treatment of light. Bonanomi's artistic legacy has been presented in regional exhibitions, including exhibitions at Villa Monastero in Varenna and the Monastero del Lavello in Calolziocorte in 2016. In 2019, the exhibition Tra Lago e Monti at the Torre Viscontea in Lecco further highlighted his landscape painting and his connection to the Lombardy region.
